Quoin Gear

Capture better footage on the water with purpose-built action camera mounts designed specifically for ILCA sailors. There are two sizes to fit the boom or mast and they easily attach with Velcro and do not slip. They are compatible with any action camera that can be attached with an action mount. All you need is a standard action camera mounting screw and nut.

A list of cases, mounts and accessories for the most popular cameras are listed below.

See these mounts and viewpoints on YouTube at No Quarter Sailing.

Accessories

To make your specific camera work with the mounts, you may need a compatible cage or case. For most setups, I recommend using a cage with a side mount and attaching a lanyard securely to the boat. If the mount comes loose or gets snagged, the lanyard keeps your camera safe.

Action Cameras: DJI Osmo Action 3/4/5/6; Insta360 Ace Pro 1/2; GoPro 9/10/11/12/13

Mounting locations:

  • Boom behind vang facing starboard
  • Boom near mast facing aft (side or bottom)
  • Aft end of boom on side facing forward
  • Suction cup to stern

When mounted to the mast or boom, consider which direction the camera would be facing on various points of sail. For example starboard boom just aft of the vang provides a great view over shoulder at the start and looks back into the cockpit sailing downwind. Upwind on port it may be covered by the sail with certain outhaul settings if it is too far aft.

360 Cameras: Insta360 X3, X4, X4 Air, X5; DJI Osmo Action 360; GoPro – MAX

Mounting locations:

  • Under boom just behind vang
  • Mast just below the boom pointed out the front

These cameras work best when the lenses are oriented port/starboard instead of fore/aft. The OEM quick releases and the aftermarket cages have mounts that orient the lenses in the wrong orientation, use the tripod mount adapter to set it right. Use a cage to secure a lanyard between the camera and boat.

About

What is a quoin? It’s a wedge-shaped block used under the breech of a cannon to adjust its elevation. Just as sailors used quoins to get the right shot long ago, QuoinGear for an action camera can help you shoot the best footage today.
